Haden Fig – Pinot Noir (2017)

An interesting example of a youthful, biodynamic and organic Oregon Pinot Noir.

Tasting Notes

Set in the heart of the Willamette Valley, Haden Fig is the pride and joy of winemaker, Erin Nuccio. Even while at the helm of Evesham Wood Vineyard, Nuccio makes plenty of time for Haden Fig. This is the project that allows him to express himself through wine. Nuccio’s philosophy on winemaking has much to do with his work in the vineyard and passion for creating exceptionally complex and balanced wines.

Like many fellow industry colleagues, Nuccio first entered the wine world through the retail sector but then found himself wanting to explore the viniculture and viticulture aspects of the wine world. Many years later, that drive and determination led Nuccio to meeting Russ Raney, of Evesham Wood Vineyard. Nuccio describes really clicking with Raney and sharing the same philosophy on winemaking, which later led to Nuccio becoming Raney’s apprentice. From there, Haden Fig was born.

Although pale ruby in colour, don’t let it fool you, this Pinot Noir is quite bright! Being a 2017, I found it slightly more tart and bright than what I was expecting after reading up on the Oregon growing year. Notes of pomegranate, cedar, and black pepper on the nose. You’ll find it showcasing cranberry, sour cherry and slight earthiness on the palate. Even with the fruit potentially giving it depth, it lacks balance and finesse. The acidity was a bit overpowering overall. I attribute that to the 3 weeks of a cooling spell they encountered towards the end of the season. While that coolness may present itself in structure, it shows itself equally in acidity and brightness. While it may have potential to age, unsure it is as ready to “drink now” as reviewed.
