Domaine Garnier & Fils – Petit Chablis (2018)

An entry level Chablis that is equal parts good value and complexity.

Tasting Notes

The Garnier brothers, Xavier and Jérôme have shared a passion for wine for over 25 years. Situated in the Chablis area on a 57-acre parcel, the family has been there for quite some time growing and producing wine. The brothers began winemaking in 1996 and only sold to restaurants in Paris and area initially, however that changed as their popularity grew. Garnier & Fils uses traditional, environmentally friendly, organic practices. They harvest later than most, ferment with natural yeast and age the wines in very large barrels. Their wine portfolio includes a Chablis Village, 1er Cru and Grand Cru. Jérôme primarily focuses on the viticulture side, while Xavier focuses on the viniculture. Although producing high-quality wines in a cooler region such as northernmost Chablis can be challenging, the brothers have been up for the challenge and proving that it can be done.

What you’ll notice first about this Chablis is the stunning golden colour followed by apricot, honey and light citrus on the nose. Although there are some Burgundian earthy notes, it is quite round and almost seems a bit indulgent for a Chablis. On the palette, notes of baked apple, honey, cinnamon and ripe peach come to mind. This is not your typical Chablis, it is easy drinking and has good texture. There is some minerality to it that is almost chalky. Overall, it is a wonderful entry-level Chablis for sipping or easy pairing.
