Natte Velleij Winery – Cinsault (2018)

While wineries often strive to have something for every wine drinker, Natte Valleij has taken on the challenge of exclusively focusing on Cinsault.

Tasting Notes

It goes without saying that young winemaker, Alex Milner, is up for a challenge. Milner became very “Cinsault-Centric” after a professor advised him to skip over the Cinsault chapter of his textbook. Curiosity and intrigue followed, leading Milner to pursue making quality Cinsault and work to change the thoughts of wine drinkers across the globe. Practicing low interference winemaking, Milner set out to find obscure patches of old drylands bush wine Cinsault across the Western Cape. The collective bottling is comprised of fruit from two sites in Swartland and Darling. The remaining two sites are located in Stellenbosch. The expansive territory covered showcases the grape well and the greater Cape even better.

Whole bunch fermentation. Old oak barrels and concrete eggs. Four separate sites that are sourced from. The specifications listed above are all integral to the character of this wine. A brilliant medium ruby colour sets the tone for this youthful wine. Medium intensity on the nose of strawberry, spice, dried mushroom and leather. The earthiness seems short lived. On the palate, notes of unripened red fruit, cranberry and pepper. Smooth and subtle tannins make this wine easy to drink. Medium body and medium acidity keep it approachable. Perfect to accompany a roast lamb dinner.
